Climate Action Plan wins Plan of the Year

A partnership between the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Olsson has brought home a second industry honor for the city’s innovative Climate Action Plan.

The American Planning Association (APA) Arkansas Chapter recognized Fayetteville with the “Plan of the Year” at the 2025 Missouri-Arkansas Bi-State Conference in St. Louis. APA juries evaluate projects based on community involvement, innovation, implementation success, sustainability, and positive change.

“The plan showcases a comprehensive and thorough approach to resilience, utilizing an intersectional strategy that addresses climate change adaptation at multiple scales – from the regional all the way to the scale of the block,” the APA jury stated.

The Climate Action Plan (CAP) works in tandem with the city’s Energy Action Plan (created in 2018 and updated in 2024). The CAP outlines strategies, goals, and actions to enhance the city’s resilience to extreme weather through nature-based solutions and reduce emissions in transportation, energy supply, buildings, waste, and cross-sector activities, according to the City of Fayetteville.

Eric Fuselier, project scientist with Olsson, led our work on the project.

Earlier in 2025, Olsson won an Engineering Excellence Award for the plan from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) – Arkansas.
