Western Road Widening

Stillwater, Oklahoma

Our firm provided engineering services to the City of Stillwater for the Western Road Widening Project from Hall of Fame Avenue to McElroy Road as part of an on-demand transportation project contract. The project was a joint venture between the City of Stillwater, Oklahoma State University (OSU), and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT). The city was responsible for the engineering, right-of-way, and utility coordination; OSU owned the additional land that was needed; and ODOT was responsible for construction.

Western Road was a two-lane asphalt roadway with minimal shoulders on the west side of campus. This portion of Western Road provides access to and from OSU, the Stillwater Regional Airport, neighborhoods, and other agencies. The majority of Western Road is located within a Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) flood control structure and traverses over the top of the structure’s dam.

The project included realigning Western Road with Farm Road in order to create a new single intersection at Hall of Fame Avenue rather than the two existing three-way un-signalized intersections. Hall of Fame Avenue and Farm Road were widened to include left-hand turn lanes and Western Road was widened from two lanes to four lanes. The vertical grade of Western Road was improved to provide adequate sight distance where it traverses the top of the dam. The tight horizontal curve between the dam and the intersection was improved to provide an adequate curve for the required design speed.
